A school for African American students, Rugg Street School's later became Langston High School in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas. After a fire in 1913, a new school building was constructed on Silver Street in 1914. The school moved again in 1964 to Chestnut Street until it closed in 1970. Under the administration of Frank Long, the first graduating class consisted of (left to right) Madge Mullholland, Myrtle Sweat, Henrietta Jenkins, Griffin Glover, Sonny Glover, Warren Shelton, Ernest English, Ida Johnson, Blanche Johnson and Rosebud Powell. (Identified by Prof. Hovie A. Henderson, last principal of Langston). Ernest English was born 1892 in Arkansas, the son of Maria English. The daughter of Charles & Lilly Powell, Rosebud Powell was born May 7, 1892 in Dalton, Whitfield County, Georgia. Living in Hot Springs and Chicago, Illinois, Powell later became a school teacher and was active in the political-economic structure of both cities. Warren Brinkley Shelton was born December 18, 1893 in Hot Springs and died in November of 1965. Shelton was working as a bath house attendant at the Fordyce Bath House in 1917.
